We have two mailing lists:

  1. smf-announce@lists.stanford.edu
    • This list is only for official announcements
    • Only this list is for official announcements
    • Average of one or two messages per month
    • Only SMF Steering Committee can post
  2. smf-kopitiam@lists.stanford.edu
    • This list is primarily for all discussion and inquiries about any topic of general interest to SMF membership
    • This list can also be used for such unofficial announcements as: non-SMF events of interest to SMF membership, social events etc.
    • All members subscribed to this list can post
    • If you wish to send medium to large attachments, we would prefer that you post these on your own webspace and send SMF a link
    • Postings to this list must be in the spirit of charity and a desire for true dialogue. "Flaming" or rude postings aimed at others may be grounds for removal from the list

General Guidelines for the Lists

This Forum and mailing lists will follow the Chatham House Rule of Confidentiality.

When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed; nor may it be mentioned that the information was received at a meeting of the Forum.

Please do not attempt to communicate with only one person or even a small number of people through these lists. We want to minimize the amount of unnecessary email in everyone's mailboxes.

As a matter of e-mail etiquette, please only quote bits of e-mails that you are directly responding to, not whole e-mails or strings of e-mails, especially if they are very large.

Steps to subscribe to the mailing list:

  1. Go here and fill out the form.
  2. You'll get an automated reply that requires you to authorize this subscription. The specific instructions is given in the e-mail.
  3. And you're done!

More information about mailing lists can be found at Stanford Mailing List Services website. Here are some tips to help you if you get an error; or do you have questions?

~ Tips ~

  • Did you put the message above in the body of the e-mail? Majordomo doesn't like the subject field that much.

  • Did you send the e-mail in plain text? Most e-mail clients automatically formats your e-mails into HTML. Find an option when you're composing your e-mail and switch from HTML or Rich Text, to Plain Text, or something similar (e.g. in Yahoo mail, change to "Plain" instead of "Color and Graphics"; in Hotmail, turn "Rich Text Editor" off)

  • Did you use your own e-mail address when following the example above?

  • Please share with us if you managed to solve a particular problem so that it can be added here. This way we can help others sign-up for the lists too! Thanks.

Change e-mail address, unsubscribe etc.

All list management tasks can now be done at mailman.stanford.edu.
