Panel discussion
Experts will draw on their respective fields to look at the past, the present and the future of Malaysian civil society. The objective is to educate the audience on its evolution, and develop in them a sense of personal responsibility over its future state. List of speakers.
Short talks by practitioners
via Video Conferencing directly from Malaysia
Here, we will connect with a broad spectrum of Malaysians who strive for positive change through their thoughts and actions. We believe that telling real stories (and hearing them from the horse's mouth) is a good way to educate and inspire people. Our speakers will talk about what drives them, what their cause is, how they have gone about it, and their experiences on the ground. As well, each speaker will be given room to present any topic that is relevant, and close to his/her heart (for example, calls to action or thoughts on the future).
Speakers from the following categories are being sought:
Student movements - Individuals who were active at the heyday of
Malaysian student movements, as well as those working at its current
frontier.
NGOs - Representatives from noteworthy non-governmental
organizations.
Media & Art - Members of the media and artists who do socially conscious
work.
After evaluating Polycom and Microsoft Netmeeting, we selected VSee as the software that we are going to use for this live video conference.
Agents in Action workshop
The focus here will be on doing. Participants will divide into groups around the issues and projects that matter most to them (we have a novel way of extracting this set). Each group will brainstorm about what they can do with respect to their topic. Groups who can will produce action plans. Finally, each group will present its results to the audience as a whole and receive feedback. Although not every group may end up with a comprehensive plan, we feel that looking at an issue through the "action lens" can produce valuable and unique insight. Nonetheless, we hope that projects conceived will take flight after the event.
Evening social
Participants will gather in an informal setting to make connections, throw around their thoughts and ideas, or simply relax. Ideas born here may find their way into the workshop, and friendships formed would make for better collaboration.
